John D. Quadarella is a PhD student in Biochemistry, Structural & Molecular Biology at Thomas Jefferson University and co-founder of SODA Northeastern, one of the nation’s longest continuously operating SODA chapters.

Born with a “perfect storm” of bony and ligamentous abnormalities, John experienced unpredictable patellar dislocations and rapid cartilage deterioration. By age 17, doctors compared his knees to those of a 70-year-old, leaving even simple movements like climbing stairs difficult.

Innovative clinical trials and five selfless tissue donors completely reconstructed his knees, transforming his life and introducing him to organ and tissue donation. “For the first time, I experienced what it was like to have knees that acted and felt my age. Now, I can live without limitations and move freely… I am forever indebted to my donors for granting me the gift of mobility.”

John believes his donors live on through him and that he bears a responsibility to honor their gift. He promised to move better than ever and share his story to encourage organ and tissue donation registration. Creating SODA Northeastern gave him the platform to fulfill that promise, educating peers about the importance of registering to donate. Since graduating in 2022, he has remained a steadfast supporter of SODA Northeastern, proud of the team keeping this mission alive.

In 2026, John joined SODA National’s Board of Directors as their inaugural Alumni Liaison, where he plans to build a robust national network of SODA-affiliated alumni.
